Campfire USA

From , former About.com Guide

Focus and Goals:

Campfire USA is youth-centered and family-focused. Campfire USA builds caring, confident youth and future leaders.

History:

Campfire Girls of America was founded in 1910. It was the first organization of it's kind for girls in the United States. The program was expanded to include boys in 1975. It currently serves approximately 750,000 children each year.

Age Levels:

Campfire USA serves children from birth through age 21. They offer a progression of programs that are designed to give children more opportunities and responsibilities.

  • Little Stars: Pre-Kindergarten (ages 3 to 5)
  • Starflight: Kindergarten through 2nd grade
  • Adventure: 3rd through 5th grade
  • Discovery: 6th through 8th grade
  • Horizon: 9th through 12th grade
Membership Criteria:

Campfire USA is open to all children regardless of race, religion, socio-economic status, gender, or disabilities.

Activities:

Campfire USA clubs usually meet weekly and provide children the opportunity to play and learn together. As the children grow, they also participate in service projects to help their communities.

Self-reliance programs teach children about personal responsibility and safety.

Leadership opportunities abound, and teens may attend a National Leadership Forum, participate in counselor-in-training programs, act as day camp or club aides and more.

Awards:

The Wohelo Award is Campfire USA's highest Award. A child must complete projects and advocate for a topic of interest to him. Earning this award is an achievement any child can be proud of.

Find a Campfire USA Club:

To find a Campfire USA Club near you, check the Campfire USA Council Locator on their Website. If there is no council in your area, you may choose to enroll your child in the Fire Tender Council, a virtual council that gives your child opportunities to experience Campfire USA programs. Contact Campfire USA at 816.285.2010 or info@campfireusa.org.

Why Campfire USA:

Pros:

  • Boys and girls work together in a co-ed environment.
  • Virtual Fire Tender Council allows children outside of an actual council area the chance to participate in Campfire USA.
  • Children have opportunities to develop leadership skills and make a difference in their communities.
  • Campfire USA does not require a statement of faith or believe in God to participate

Cons:

  • Limited Councils nation-wide may make it difficult to find a club for your child.
