Junior Girl Scouts Learn to Sew and Donate Baby Quilts

From , former About.com Guide

September is National Sewing Month. To celebrate, the Junior Girl Scouts of GSCLC Troop 43 earned their Sew Simple badge. Fourth graders Maggie, Darien, Kimberley, Linda, Summer, Tiffanie, Veronica and Emily spent their September meetings learning about fabric, thread, patterns and more.

They learned basic stitches, both by hand and on a sewing machine. After practicing their skills, they completed a hand sewn baby doll to bring home.

The girls used sewing machines to piece 2 patchwork baby quilts. They learned to layer the backing, batting and front and tie the quilts. These quilts, created with love, will be donated to a local shelter.

From their Troop Leader: “My girls worked hard on challenging skills. They choose to make the quilts as their big project, and it was their idea to donate their hard work. My girls showed they know how to live by the girl scout law. They really put their hearts into it and I'm very proud of them.”
