Boys to Men - - Growing with the Boy Scouts of America

From Heidi Coghlan, for About.com

Boy Scout Ages:

Boys from 6th through 12th grades participate in the Boy Scout program.

Boy Scout Motto:

Be prepared.

Boy Scout Slogan:

Do a good turn daily.

Boy Scout Promise:

On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight.

Boy Scout Law:

Boy Scouts promise to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. Each aspect of the law helps boys develop their characters and values. The What is Boy Scouting Fact Sheet on the Boy Scout Web site has more information about the components of the Boy Scout Law.

Uniform:

The Boy Scout uniform consists of a tan shirt with olive shorts/pants and olive socks. Boy Scouts also wear a neckerchief and cap.

Activities:

Boys can participate in camping trips, hiking, and field trips. They can organize and carry out community service activities. They may learn about various career fields, how to handle money and run a business or study science, learn public speaking or first aid. They will explore physical fitness, family life, and citizenship. The activities available to Boy Scouts are almost endless and are designed to build character, leadership and personal values.

Merit Badges:

At the core of the Boy Scout program are merit badges. They are awards that encourage the boys to explore a variety of activities and fields. Earning a badge shows that the scout has demonstrated skill in a certain area. Certain badges are required for various stages of advancement through the Boy Scouts.

Advancement:

Boy scouts are encouraged to learn and grow through a series of challenges. Each challenge is planned and executed by the scout, who is then rewarded with a badge representing his rank. These are:

  • Tenderfoot
  • Second Class
  • First Class
  • Star
  • Life
  • Eagle

The Eagle Award:

The Eagle Award is the highest advancement rank and the highest award a Boy Scout can earn. The young man who earns it will have worked his way through the Boy Scout ranks, participated in service projects, had opportunities to lead, attended conferences, and been tested and reviewed. It represents a significant achievement of which he can be proud.

Find a Troop

Boy Scouts meet around the community. Check local schools, churches and community centers to find a troop meeting near you. You can also locate a troop through your local council. Try the Council Locator on the Boy Scout Web site.

Boys Become Men

The Boy Scout program gives boys opportunities to learn, overcome challenges and solidify their values. In doing so, boys become responsible young men, better prepared to take their place in the adult world.

The skills and lessons Boy Scouts learn will carry them far into their adult lives. If you have a son of Boy Scout age, consider the Boy Scouts to give him a solid foundation and help him learn to achieve.
