My Son Joins Cub Scouts, part 2

Tuesday June 20, 2006

Recently, my reluctant son and I were at an event when I had an idea. His future den leader was there also, with her son. I introduced the 2 boys, explained they'd be in Cub Scouts together and left them to talk. That night when I asked my son about it, he talked about his new friend and I could tell he was more willing to try Scouts.

Children can often get children involved where adults can't. While, we are usually concerned this will mean bad things, it isn't always negative. By introducing your reluctant child to other members of a club ahead of time, you give your child a reason to participate -- to hang out with his new friends. You are also making him feel less like a stranger or "the new kid" because he will know someone when he gets there.

Never underestimate the power of positive peer pressure.
